Belarusian graphic artist, teacher, People's Artist of Belarus
Arlen (Arsen) Mikhailovich Kashkurevich was born on September 15, 1929 in the city of Minsk in a family of employees. In 1947, he graduated from the 9th grade and entered the Minsk Industrial College. Two years later, he stopped studying at the technical school and entered the Minsk Art College. He successfully graduated in 1953. During his studies, his teachers were such artists as Nadezhda Ivanovna Golovchenko, Lev Meyerovich Leitman, Vladimir Pavlovich Sukhoverkhov. Arlen Kashkurevich was very fond of sports, he was engaged in boxing, acrobatics, barbell. He portrayed his passion in creativity – he defended his diploma on a sports topic after graduating from art school. In 1953-1959 he studied at the Belarusian State Theater and Art Institute. His teacher in drawing was Valentin Viktorovich Volkov, in painting – Vitaly Konstantinovich Tsvirko, in graphics and composition – Semyon Petrovich Gerus. Graduation thesis from BSTU – illustrations for the novel “Nuclear Power Plant” by the Icelandic writer Halldor Laxness. The graphic showed well the style and ideological and artistic orientation of the novel in them. The author of the book himself noted that A.N.Kushkurevich’s illustrations are the best of all the numerous designs of his book in other countries. From 1959 to 1969, he worked as a teacher at the Graphics Department at the Belarusian State Technical University. A.N.Kashkurevich has been a member of the Council of Artists of the BSSR since 1960. Since the same year, he participated in national, All-Union and international exhibitions. Since 1969, he has been engaged in creative work. He worked under contracts with the art Fund of the BSSR, the publishing houses “Fiction”, “Belarus”, “Narodnaya Asveta”, etc. During his time in publishing houses, he designed about 200 books. Among his works are illustrations for such works as: “The Third Generation” by Kuzma Chorny, “The Measure of Time” by Lidia Arabey, “The Highest Floor” by Alexander Savitsky, “Three Poems” by Yanka Kupala, “The Khatyn Story” by Ales Adamovich, “His Battalion” by Vasily Bykov, short stories by Bulgarian writers, etc. Besides illustrating books, A.M.Kushkurevich was engaged in easel graphics. Among his works are the following series: “Airport” (1962), “City and People” (1963-1964), “Masters” (1966-1967), “Partisans” (1969-1970), “Blockade” (1970-1978) and others.
