Belarusian writer, literary critic, teacher
Ivan Yakovlevich Naumenko is an outstanding Belarusian writer, literary critic, teacher and public figure, whose life and work have become an important part of the cultural heritage of Belarus. He was born into a working-class family in the small town of Vasilevichi. From a young age, he showed a talent for literature, but his plans were interrupted by the Great Patriotic War. At the age of seventeen, I.Ya. Naumenko became a member of the antifascist underground and the partisan movement, and then fought in a reconnaissance company at the front, was wounded twice and concussed.

After the war, Ivan Yakovlevich devoted himself to literature and science. His work, steeped in the theme of war, tells about human destinies, their heroism and tragedy. Among his most famous works are the novels “A Pine Tree by the Road”, “The Wind in the Pines”, “forty-third”, “The Sadness of the white nights”, as well as numerous short stories and novellas. I.Ya. Naumenko also made a significant contribution to the study of Belarusian literature, explored the work of Yanka Kupala, Yakub Kolas and other classics.

In addition to literary activity, I.Ya. Naumenko was engaged in teaching at the Belarusian State University, headed the Yanka Kupala Institute of Literature, was vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Chairman of the Supreme Council of the BSSR. His efforts contributed to the development of the Belarusian language and culture. In 1978. Ivan Yakovlevich received the honorary title of Honored Scientist of the BSSR. In 1995, he became a national writer of Belarus.
