Poet, translator, member of the Writers' Union of Belarus since 1934. People's Poet of Belarus (1968). Laureate of USSR State Prizes (1946 – for the poem «Banner of the Brigade», 1949 – for the poem «New Channel»). Laureate of the State Prize of Belarus named after Y.Kupala (1970 - for translations of the poetry of M. Lermontov, the poems «The Aeneid» by I.Kotlyarevsky, «The Song of Hiawatha» by G.Langfellow). Laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize of Belarus (1968 - for the poems «Terrible Forest», «Only Forward», «Song of the Glorious March» and poetry in periodicals).
Born in the village of Samoteevichi, Mogilev region. in a family of teachers. He studied at the Samotevich seven-year school and the Mstislav Pedagogical College.

Was friends with Yu. Tavbin, Dm. Astapenko, to whom he dedicated the poem «Monologue» in 1965.
He began writing his first poems at the age of 6. In 1930, the first collection of poems,««The Flourishing of the Earth», was published.
From July 1941 he worked for the army newspaper «Banner of the Soviets». From December 1943 until liberation – at the Belarusian headquarters of the partisan movement. 1945-46 – editor of the newspaper «Literature and Art». The poem «Brigade Banner» (1942) is a requiem for the defenders of the homeland who died during the war.

The dramatic poem «Hamutius» (1975), through the image of the democratic revolutionary K.Kalinovsky, united the historical past with the present.
He wrote scripts for films, wrote critical and journalistic articles. The writer’s fund No. 411 is stored in the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art.
